Extracurricular Activities
Basketball/Cheerleading
Upward is an evangelistic sports ministry specifically designed for K thru 6th grade boys & girls that promotes salvation, character and self-esteem in every child. Children who sign up will practice for one hour per week and will have one game per week (on Saturdays). Practices are structured so that 1/2 way through practice, the coach will lead the team in a devotion followed by a memory scripture that the children can practice & come back to recite the following week. At the games, every child gets an award at every game. Awards are for things like Best Sportsmanship, Most Christ-likeness, Best Defense & more. Games start with the referees praying with both teams. The refs, throughout the game, call the necessary infractions, but stop to teach the kids what that infraction is.Included in the registration for basketball players is a reversible game jersey, a t-shirt, a Bible-zine (this year it's the books of Luke & John) and Scriptunes CD with the memory scriptures put to music. The cheerleaders will receive a cheer top, skort, hair ribbons, Biblezine, Scriptunes, pom pons & a megaphone.
Practices begin in January. The first game day is on January 19th. The end-of-season awards celebration (where every child gets an awesome end-of-season award) is on March 15th.
The cost for basketball is $45 and for cheerleading is $50. Children are evaluated before the teams are formed so that teams can be evenly distributed. Evaluation days are November 3rd and November 10th. Players & cheerleaders must come to one evaluation day in order to be sized for their uniform.

RHAA News
RHAA basketball will take registrations Monday, October 22nd and Thursday, October 25th, at the Rolla Junior High School gym from 7- 7:15 pm and from 8:45 - 9 pm. Plan to register your players either at the beginning or end of the open gyms to be held that night.
RHAA basketball is for girls and boys ages 12 - 18 (as of Sept 1, 2007). If the number and age of the registrants allows, we will have 2 boys teams and 2 girls teams -- Varsity and junior high for each. The basketball season runs from November through the first couple days of March.
We will have a rough schedule for you to view when you register, so you can determine if this program is one your family can commit to. We have tried to schedule games with teams that are similar to us in ability so that we can have competitive games, and we are scheduling less games overall.
A registration form is attached if you prefer to fill it out in advance. (Please format it so that it fits all on one page.) Registration forms will also be available at the gym the night of registration. Fees are $75 for new players and $40 for returning players.
New players: please fill in all the information on the form, including a parent signature.
Returning players: Please write the player's name and birthdate, write in any changes since last year, and sign it with a current date. (We'll have last year's forms at registration for you to check your information.)
If you have any questions about RHAA basketball, email the Halls at halls8@embarqmail.com or call them at 364-4858.

2006-2007 UMR Outreach Play Schedule
My name is Pam Williams and I am once again coordinating attendance for the UMR School Outreach programs. These plays can be a great addition to your home school experience. The children enjoy the live perfomances and often they can be great springboards for discussion on how the subject matter was treated.
Last year homeschooling families were allowed to purchase their tickets directly from the Leach Theater Box office for the performance of their choice. Because so many of the performances were sold out last year, the House Manager, Emily Brickler, has requested that we once again purchase our tickets as a group. This will help ensure that there will be adequate seats reserved for those who wish to attend. If you do not purchase your tickets with our group, it may be possible to purchase them later directly from the box office, but Ms. Brickler is doubtful that seats will be available.
The performances this year are as follows:
Thursday, 10/4/07 9:30 am or 1:00 pm
Friday, 10/5/07 9:30 am or 1:00 pm
San Jose Taiko (3rd - 7th grades). San Jose Taiko has
mesmerized audiences and critics with the powerful,
spellbinding and propulsive sounds of the taiko drums for
three decades. Inspired by traditional Japanese drumming,
company performers express the beauty and harmony of the
human spirit through the voice of the taiko as they strive
to create new dimensions in movement and dance.
Thursday, 11/8/07 9:30 am or 1:00 pm
Volotshky Dance Company (8th - 12th grades). Volotshky
combines authenticity and originality in style and
composition, drawing from a repertoire of over 40
traditional dances representing every region of the Ukraine.
Voltshky creates a rousing show of art and energy
characteristic of the vitality of the Ukrainian people. The
Volotshky style is bold and powerful, featuring dazzling
athleticism.
Thursday, 1/17/08 9:30 am or 1:00 pm.
Let's Go Science Show (2nd -4th grades) Jest In Time
Educational Programs (www.jestintime.com). The talented
Professor Smart and the wacky Ms. Knowitall join forces for
an educational, entertaining, exciting, and experiential
extravaganza.
Tuesday, 2/12/08 9:30 am or 1:00 pm
Lion, Witch and Wardrobe (grades K -2). The Traveling
Lantern Theater Company presents a play based on the C.S.
Lewis book for children.
Friday, 4/4/08 9:30 am or 1:00 pm
Geist: Visual Comedian (grades 3 - 6). Outlandish visual
comedy will transform the stage into a whirlwind of energy
as Geist combines his unique blend of new vaudevillian
skills - magic, mime, juggling, physical comedy and tons of
zany audience participation. Sit back, hold onto your seats
and experience this multi-talented one-man detour to
hilarity.
These performances will be held at the Leach Theater in Castleman Hall on the UMR campus. We will be attending the 1:00 session of each show. Student seats are $3.00 per seat. For every 10 students we will be allowed 1 free chaperone seat. I will be purchasing our group's tickets on Friday, Sept. 1st. If you wish to purchase your tickets with us please email Pam asap at waltpam@quixnet.net for further instructions.
Basic Art Seminar I
In this basic art workshop we start with drawing and sketching. We teach outline, shading, shadow, texture, scale, center of interest, perspective, props, and setting with a complete project combining all these elements. Students learn how to draw a face and do a portrait. Next we teach one and two point perspective. After our lunch break, we show students how to reproduce a picture. We do this by demonstrating techniques such as the use of basic shapes, proportions and informal and formal grids. We explain how to make a picture using colored art chalk pastels and detailing with charcoal pencils. We also show students how to use oil pastels. Students then use all of their newly acquired skills to create their own compositions. They will produce two complete original compositions. Finally, the students experiment with a sculpting medium and make a sculpture.
Basic Color Seminar
This workshop begins with the basics of shading, shadow, and texture. The student first draws a picture in black and white. This is followed by a short lecture on color theory and the color wheel. The students then do a monochromatic picture. We demonstrate how to use light and darkness to define objects. Using complementary colors, students draw a still life of fruit. Next, students take a picture of their choice and make it into a color wheel using oil pastels. After our lunch break, we begin painting on canvas. First a presentation is given on how to get a picture onto the canvas. After their canvas painting is completed, students are given a water color demonstration and then have the opportunity to produce their own watercolor. We use tube watercolors on high quality paper.
Lewis and Clark
We begin this workshop learning about portrait art and drawing the face. Students will do a portrait of Lewis or Clark. Handouts are given on both. Next, we explore cartography history and the mapping of the Louisiana purchase. Students will show the purchase by making a map on parchment. Students will also work with one and two point perspective to aid in their understanding of form. These traditional drawing techniques will enhance their efforts to draw both the Lewis and Clark air gun and the Jefferson White House. A historical review of Jefferson's decision to make the purchase will be discussed during this session. Further discussion will center around what kind of animal life was encountered on the expedition. An array of wildlife including bear, deer, beaver and squirrel will be drawn while working with shading, shadow, and texture. We will look at a study of American wilderness landscape which will include a review of literature by Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt. The element of space will be reviewed and students will be shown how to include atmospheric perspective in their drawings. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of various Native American tribes and their lifestyles. Students will make actual clay pots and learn about these early utilitarian vessels that were both functional and aesthetic.
Science through Art
We begin with a lesson on astronomy and we do a solar system picture, learning how to shade and color the planets on black paper. We talk about zoology and make a metamorphosis picture of a caterpillar to a butterfly, or a tadpole to a frog. Students draw a bear in his natural habitat in one dimension, and then sculpt it in three dimensions. After a discussion on the science of botany, students draw plants and flowers. Finally, we learn about flight, and design and build a flying machine.
Ancient History through Art
This workshop begins with a lesson about shading, shadow, texture, perspective, props, etc., during which students create an animal of their own design. The next lesson explores Noah’s ark and the color wheel. Students learn how to draw the ark in one point perspective, and blending colors in a rainbow. This is followed by cave paintings on sandpaper. Making a clay tablet, we discuss the invention of writing. We then make a heavy bronze foil two dimensional art form as we discuss the Bronze Age. We then talk about Egyptian orthostats, and make a necklace. After the lunch break, we learn about ancient Greek pottery, and paint on a curved surface. Students also make a mosaic or fresco. Finally, we learn to draw Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns and end the workshop drawing the Parthenon in two point perspective.
American History through Art IWe begin this workshop by looking at the works of great early American portrait artists, and then draw a structured portrait of George Washington on black paper using colored chalks and charcoal pencils. We look at pictures of John James Audubon’s work and draw a bird picture using oil pastels. After looking at pictures by Frederick Remington and Charles M. Russell, students do a process drawing of a horse head using pencils and 12” x 18” white paper. After the lunch break, students create an elaborate stick weaving, work with clay, learn pottery techniques, and make a sand painting. We conclude with a discussion about Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan. Students produce a cityscape in one point perspective.
American History through Art II
In this workshop we do miniature portraits while talking about the portraits drawn by Charles Peale for his troops during the Revolutionary War. We do a landscape on canvas while looking at the landscapes of Thomas Moran and Albert Bierdstat. We make a process drawing of a horse using colored chalk on black paper, after examining the works of Frederick Remington and Charles M. Russell. We sculpt a horse using pottery clay or Sculpey®. Students learn about Thomas Nast, the inventor of the democratic donkey and republican elephant, and create their own comic strip. We end the day doing a picture of Mt. Rushmore while learning about portrait art.
Renaissance History through Art
This workshop begins with a lesson on illuminated texts. Students create an illuminated text using gold and silver paint pens, gel pens and colored pencils. We continue with a heraldry lesson and design a crest for a shield, draw a Byzantine cross, and make a triptych. We use a clay mold to make an original medallion. After lunch, we paint the medallion. Students learn about the great frescos of the Renaissance artists and then paint their own. Students also draw a room similar to the one in Leonardo DaVinci’s “The Last Supper,” and learn about the discovery of perspective. We end the session with a discussion about William Shakespeare.
*Ocean Art
This workshop introduces students to some of the master artists who paint scenes under the ocean, such as David Miller and Robert Lyn Nelson. It also includes seascapes by Winslow Homes and Washington Alston. Students create seven projects that relate to the sea, including a crayon resist picture, and a mixed media water color picture of creatures under the sea. We explain how to draw a dolphin using shading, shadow, and texture, and how to sculpt a dolphin. Students learn to draw a variety of salt water fish, and a sea horse. *

Worldview Class
Depending on what the parents decide, the student can (1) just come for the DVD and discussion or (2) he/she can also do the readings/questions, tests, a research paper, speech and debate or (3) some agreed upon modified version of (2). For those of you who are familiar with last year's class, we don't plan to have as much homework as before.
This course can be counted as one Social Studies credit if you choose for your child to take the full homework plan. Otherwise, it would be between 1/4 and 1/2. This class will be girls only rather than coed.
If you read the website's write up about the curriculum, it says it is for high school seniors. A younger child could take it if he/she is capable of reasoning skills and is interested in worldviews. Last year, we had a variety of ages from Junior High to 12th grade in our last class and most seemed to benefit from the videos and discussions although the older students seemed better able to discuss the subjects.
Some have asked if I will offer this class again and I can't say for sure what God will want me to do after my last child graduates this year, but its a possibility.
We plan to meet in our home - just East of Rolla about 1 minute from the city limits on Quail Run.
I am asking for each student to give $15 per month or a barter of equal value.
If you would like for me to keep you posted on the class information, answer questions or sign up your child and get her books; you can email me at:
